5 Things to Know Before Your Bridal Fitting

Bride being fitted for wedding dress alterations

Your wedding dress is one of the most important garments you will ever wear. Getting the fit right can mean the difference between feeling self-conscious and feeling absolutely radiant. Here are five things every bride should know before her first fitting.

1. Schedule Early, But Not Too Early

We recommend scheduling your first fitting 8 to 12 weeks before your wedding day. This gives us enough time for multiple fittings (most bridal alterations require 2-3 visits) without rushing. If you schedule too early and your weight changes, we may need to make additional adjustments.

2. Bring Your Wedding Shoes and Undergarments

The height of your heels directly affects your hem length, and the undergarments you plan to wear on your wedding day will affect how the bodice fits. Bring both to every fitting. If you have not purchased them yet, choose them before your first appointment.

3. Know Your Budget (But Ask Questions)

Bridal alterations can range from $150 for simple hemming to $500+ for extensive restructuring. During your consultation, we will walk you through exactly what needs to be done and provide a detailed quote. There are no surprises at Hemline & Honey.

4. Bring One Trusted Person

Too many opinions can be overwhelming. Bring one person whose judgment you trust, whether that is your mother, maid of honor, or partner. They can help you see things from another angle while keeping the experience focused and enjoyable.

5. Trust the Process

A first fitting can feel intimidating. The dress might be pinned, clipped, and marked in ways that do not look finished. That is completely normal. Trust your tailor's vision and know that the final result will be worth the patience.

Pro Tip from Our Studio

Take photos at each fitting. This helps you track progress and gives your tailor helpful reference points between appointments.
